Vickery in sweat

England learn today whether they will lose their captain and a key player for the World Cup showdown against South Africa.

Phil Vickery was seen to take out American centre Paul Emerick with a crude trip during Saturday's match in Lens.

Although the Wasps prop insists it was an accident, citing commissioner Steve Hinds is sure to look at the incident.

The New Zealander has 48 hours from the final whistle to decide whether to charge Vickery.

There was fury at Wasps two years ago when Serge Betsen broke Stuart Abbott's leg with a trip during a European Cup tie - though the French flanker escaped punishment.

Emerick, who was himself sin-binned for a spear tackle later in the game on Olly Barkley, played down the Vickery incident. "I've got a bruised knee but it's alright," he said. "I don't think there was any real malice or intent."

Should Vickery be found guilty of fou l play Mat t Stevens will take over at prop. The capt aincy would likely go to Mike Catt.
